If you have a clogged or jammed disposal, your first instinct might be to call a plumber. In some cases, you do need to call a professional, but this isn’t always true. Sometimes, the solution requires no plumbing knowledge at all. Here is something you can try:

  • Unplug the garbage disposal
  • Look for a hex-shaped hole and use a ¼ inch hex wrench to force it back and forth in both directions
  • If there is no hex hole, you can use a short broom stick and put it into the disposal to force it against the blades

If your disposal hums but won’t grind, then odds are it’s a jammed disposal and these steps should help you fix it.
