Home inspections are not cheap and run the gamut of between $200 and $700. If you’re going to make that kind of investment — in addition to the already hefty investment that is the house itself — you may as well make the most of it by getting a two-for-one deal from the inspector.

As an inspector points out issues (which he or she is likely to do), ask how much he or she anticipates the cost of repairs will be. Most inspectors double up as contractors or partner with local contractors that they recommend to buyers.

Bear in mind that if an inspector does give quotes, he or she is likely to bid high. Use the inspector’s figures as a jumping-off point, but get estimates from one to two other contractors. This process should guide you toward the contractor that offers the most value at the best price.
