When it comes to mold and dust, you might be surprised to learn how easy it is to confuse the two. Not only can mold grow on dust itself, it can grow on walls, wood, paper products, insulation and many other places that dust also gathers.

Certain molds have different characteristics:

  • Cladosporium is brown, green or black.
  • Aspergillus is green, brown, yellow, grey, black or white.
  • Penicillin may be green, blue or white.

One of the ways that you can tell mold from dust is by where it gathers. If you are looking at a horizontal surface, remember that gravity pulls dust to the top. If you find dust underneath on the bottom of a surface (like a shelf), then you are probably looking at mold.
