Memorial Day is the unofficial beginning of summer and is usually a day for barbeques, picnics and time with friends and family. With all of the enjoyment that surrounds this three-day weekend, it can be easy to forget the purpose behind the National holiday.

Memorial Day (originally called Decoration Day) dates back to Civil War times. It was a day set aside to honor both Confederate and Union soldiers who lost their lives in battle. Today we continue to honor brave men and women who died while defending our country. We also remember loved ones who have passed. It is a solemn but beautiful day to reflect on memories of loved ones and to show gratitude for those who sacrificed all for our freedoms.

This Memorial Day, enjoy the festivities and offer a silent thanks for those who’ve gone before.
